Navigating Workplace Bullying

Workplace bullying is any unwelcome behaviour which is hostile and offensive to an individual. The perpetrator’s goal is often to assert his or her dominance over the victim. Perpetrators are often individuals who hold positions of power over the victim, however it can be a peer or a subordinate.

Signs of workplace bullying

  • Being excluded from meetings.
  • Deliberate limiting of access to information to do your work.
  • Unreasonable demands or workload compared to teammates.
  • Exclusion from team social events or WhatsApp groups.
  • Continuous undermining and disregard in meetings.
  • Being excluded from team outings or WhatsApp groups.
  • Being expected to be available 24/7 via email or call.

How to address bullying

  • Confide in trusted colleague.
  • Seek counselling.
  • Keep record of incidents.
  • Inform HR and send email follow up.
  • Escalate matter internally should bullying persist.
  • Approach CCMA for unfair labour practice or
  • Resign if treatment is unbearable and internal grievance process exhausted.
  • Approach the CCMA for constructive dismissal.
